Bold & Oversized Flower Vases

For (K–3) This is one of my personal favorites—I do it at least once a year with my K–3 students, and it never disappoints! We go oversized with the paper, because let’s be honest: sometimes kids just need to go big. It challenges their motor skills, composition sense, and gives them freedom to be bold.

Students start by drawing a horizon line (a.k.a. a table line), then a simple vase shape. After that, it’s all about circles for flowers—keeping things approachable but full of potential. I rotate the color focus depending on what we’re studying: complementary colors, warm, or cool.

The magic touch? A final layer of black paint outlining around every shape. It ties the whole thing together and makes those colors pop like stained glass.

Why it works: Big paper, bold color, and basic shapes come together to create some of the most eye-catching displays of the year. It’s great for color theory practice and for building confidence with scale and paint control.
