TP Donut Sculptures… with a Drawing Twist!
Our toilet paper donut sculptures are always a classroom favorite—but this year, we took the project one step further. After students sculpted and painted their delicious-looking donuts, complete with colorful icing, sprinkles, and creative toppings, they weren't finished just yet. Instead of putting their sculptures on display immediately, we challenged them to become artists of observation by drawing their own donut creations.
Each drawing focused on a different artistic skill. Students created one drawing using line only, another emphasizing value and shading, a third exploring realistic color, and a fourth using imaginative patterns and decorative designs. Although they were drawing the same subject each time, every version required them to observe in a new way and think differently about the elements of art.
This extension transformed a fun sculpture project into a comprehensive observational drawing lesson. Students quickly realized how much closer they had to look at their own artwork to accurately capture its curves, textures, shadows, and details on paper. They also gained confidence by seeing how one artwork can inspire many creative interpretations.
To finish, we displayed each sculpture alongside its collection of drawings, creating a gallery-style installation that looked like a colorful still life exhibit. The combination of three-dimensional artwork with multiple drawing studies made for an eye-catching display that celebrated both creativity and artistic growth.
Why it works:This lesson encourages students to slow down and truly observe their own work while exploring how the same subject can be interpreted across multiple media. It strengthens skills in observation, line, value, color, texture, and design, while reinforcing the idea that artists often revisit the same subject in different ways. Best of all, students love seeing their playful donut sculptures become the inspiration for an entire series of artworks, making the final display both meaningful and visually stunning.
